A show just for web entrepreneurs

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

While aimlessly flipping around the talking box the other night, I stumbled upon a title that grabbed my attention. The show, “Startup Junkies,” airs on the esoteric-sounding, ambiguously-targeted MOJO network. Sounding about what I thought it might be lured me into taking it for a spin.

Upon watching, it didn’t seem particularly engaging, in say the way Startup Dot Com was. While the idea is interesting and could have potentially made for a great reality show, the people (an uninspired, haggard looking lot) and the company, Earth Class Mail (a terrible name for an auto-sorting junk mail service) didn’t exactly grab my attention. All said, I didn’t give it the full viewing and perhaps should give it another chance.

There could be some lessons worth learning and some insight I couldn’t easily gain elsewhere. If you have seen it or see it after this and have an opinion, please report back to me for further consideration.

The Return Of The “Best” Show On Television

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

Thought it’s always been a hard call for me between The Sopranos and The Wire as the best show on television (I usually give a slight nod to The Sopranos for its attention to detail, unparalleled directing and overarching story-lines), it’s not debatable that it seems to have always been the bastard stepbrother, not getting it’s full due.

While I initially resisted the show because I have a quirk about jumping in late, I queued up Netflix and got up to speed, and in the process, supremely hooked.

Though like many on a message board I frequent, prefer the action and street-thug aspects of the show, I found every season to be equally rewarding on all fronts; intellectually, emotionally and from a sheer entertainment standpoint. It has everything.

This season promises to be particularly watch-worthy as it covers a subject I’ve been following closely the last year, the newspaper publishing industry. It is sure to feature touch-points on the decline in readership, and the growth and subsequent stagnation in online revenue, among the immediate issues concerning Baltimore proper. It’s a fair call to guess it will keep close tabs on our favorite characters like Clay Davis, Omar, Snoop, McNulty, Bunk, and of course, the ever-unlucky Bubbles.

The series premiere of the final season airs Sunday night, January 6 at 9PM on HBO.

‘Breaking Bad’ on AMC

Friday, January 4th, 2008

The cable channel AMC has caught my attention with it’s new foray into series television. Its show “Mad Men” from Sopranos alumnus Matthew Weiner last season was excellent, on par with the quality of that legendary crime/family show. HBO passed on “Mad Men,” which left it in the capable hands of AMC.

Now, it introduces us to “Breaking Bad,” a show about a high school chemistry teacher named Walter White, who is liberated through a terminal diagnosis. Drugs, guns, high drama and suspense. Looks like my kind of show. We’ll see if AMC can keep the quality level high or if “Mad Men” was a fluke.

Sopranos Music

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

I was already a huge fan of The Sopranos (formerly on HBO), and found myself drawn in by the sublime music selections put together by music editor Kathryn Dayak and in part by the show’s creator, David Chase. Mr. Chase was instantly put in a lofty place when I learned he discovered A3’s remix of Leonard Cohen’s brilliant “Woke Up This Morning” (iTunes link) aka The Sopranos theme song on KCRW, a favorite station of mine back in L.A.

The HBO site has a complete episode guide, with a listing of music tracks for each episode, some with links directly to iTunes. I am probably the perfect candidate for their target demo as I have pretty diverse taste in music, running from classical to punk to hip hop to metal to electronic and so on. I picked up several tracks, including Buddy Miles, James Gang, Willie Bobo, Diana Ross, Husky Rescue and Los Lobos.
